Sheep Ireland held a sheep industry consultation meeting in Tullamore yesterday Wednesday 9th October. It was very well attended with representatives from all stakeholders: LambPlus , MALP , CPT, Better Farms and recording commercial farmers as well as the processors, Teagasc, UCD and Sheep Ireland board and staff.
It was an opportunity for Sheep Ireland and its collaborators to present their proposal to make radical changes to the EUROSTAR index. It is proposed to have a Terminal index and a Replacement index only. The theory, reasoning and calculation behind this was explained in detail. There was also a presentation on genomics and the future it promises in breed improvement. It is proposed to start collecting samples for DNA soon to build a database of the stock rams at least.
